A Friend of God

Too often when we think of a friend, we only think of a person. As a believer, redeemed out of this world, called into relationship with God through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, we are friends of God too.

A quick read of the first couple of chapters in Genesis reminds us that when God created everything, including Adam and Eve, it was good. I mean really good, including man’s relationship with God. They experienced fellowship with God, spent time with Him, and nothing caused division between God and man. But as we know, sin entered the world – see Genesis 3. And the disastrous consequences of sin included the separation between man and God, and thus things were no longer so good.

Another consequence of the fall was the banishment of Adam and Eve out of the garden. In a sense, this banishment was an act of mercy. What if Adam and Eve, in a fallen state, would have continued to partake of the fruit from the tree of life? In His mercy, God cast man out but has provided a way to re-establish fellowship with Him!

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. 18 Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation. 2 Cor. 5:17

These verses tell us that we were once friends with God, but that sin caused division between man and God. But they also tell us that God Himself has brought us back into friendship with Himself. That’s what it means to be reconciled, to repair a relationship previously broken. If you’ve not chosen to put your trust in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, please know that this reconciliation is possible. And for those who have, live in the truth that you are now and forever a friend of God!
