Anthem Living

Have you ever read or heard something that just stuck in your mind more than other things? I’m talking about something that you have read or heard and you just run with it. It literally becomes “your anthem”. You quote it more than anything else, you post it on Facebook or Twitter, blog about it… you even share it with other people whether they asked for it or not ;). Sometimes it’s a phrase, a line from a song, a movie quote, or a Bible verse; just something that rocks your world and changes your view on something.

Well, in this season of my life, my “anthem” is Isaiah 26:3
: “He will keep in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You”. I know I’m not an Israelite, but I still believe this verse can apply to any Christian.

Have you ever been in a situation where you had no idea what the next step was? Whenever I experience this, a lot of times my first response is to freak out, going berserk with stress and worry and trying to figure out how I will fix it or make something happen. I will admit that I am naturally a nervous/anxious person anyway, but add some stress in there and you will see a crazy mess!

Well, this year has been filled with random situations arriving on the doorstep of my life, situations I had and have no control over. It really doesn’t matter what I do, because it is so clear the only one who can work it out is God. Of course I panicked at first to compensate for my nervous/anxious personality and because I am a super planner. I have everything written down in my planner, and yes, each category is color-coded. When less than exciting, unplanned for things in life present themselves to me, I will panic.

The Lord brought me to Isaiah 26:3 during one of these times. The first time I read it, it didn’t really sink in. Then the next time I read it and really thought about it, I felt like it slapped me in the face, in a good way of course… if being slapped in the face can be a good thing.

You might have the same question that I did, which was: what does that mean in my life?

One way for me to apply it to my life is that in His awesome character, God is who He says He is. He will do what He says He will do. He is constant. He is faithful and true. In an ever changing world, there is one person I can keep my focus on who will never change. It means keeping our focus on the Lord rather than the situation. It means trusting that the Lord is the only source of true peace because your focus is on the giver of true peace. I have a choice. You have a choice. We can believe in His character and who He says He is regardless of the circumstance or how we feel or what other people tell us.

Trusting in the Lord and keeping my focus on Him not only takes a lot of pressure off of me and what I can “do”, but it also gives me peace in an un-peaceful and stressful world! I would much rather keep my gaze on something that will never change, than let my eyes drift to and fro, looking for a peace that I will never find on my own.
