I Let You Be Hungry

“But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss…in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord,” (Philippians 3:7,8).

This month Transform is focusing on how studying the Bible has changed your life. I do not have much of a salvation testimony (as far as drug dealer to orphanage-founder), but I do have a Bible study testimony–specifically an Inductive study testimony. From 5 years old I have tried to live a good Christian life. Until I began studying the Word inductively however, I never knew God. Until Inductive I never knew what it meant to live for God not because that is what church goers do, but because I am consumed by Him. What taught me this? Glad you asked.

Seven years ago my family moved away from a social life in South Florida to a rather secluded life in the mountains of North Carolina. I dreamed of moving here, but that dream also meant isolation from friends my age and extended family. When I felt most the loss of those things, not long after the move, my mother gave me my very first Inductive study: the In & Out on Daniel. (Disclaimer: not the best to start on!) I had no clue what I was doing, but after that I could not stop. Hunger for relationships I left drove me to fill that void in relationship with God. Bible study satisfied that drive.

In Philippians 3:7-8, Paul could easily have continued, “And whatever things were loss to me, those things I count as gain in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.”

My losses came in the isolation, deprivation, and various trials of these past 7 years. But Bible study turned those losses into gain. Just by learning to let God’s Word speak for itself, I came to know God personally and intimately. He became and still becomes all satisfying. I have thus very literally lived out Deuteronomy 8:2a,3:

“You shall remember all the way which the LORD your God has led you in the wilderness…that He might humble you, testing you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. He humbled you and let you be hungry…that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD.”

I do not live by friends, family, relationships, status, lifestyle, job, education, etc. Seven years studying Inductive has shown me that I live alone by the Word that was breathed out of the mouth of my God. The best part: as He reveals Himself in that Word He becomes increasingly more real, alive, and exhilarating to me.

Bible study fashioned me into who I am today. Had I not moved here–had I not started Inductive Study–today I would be a very different person…

 But I did move…

God gave me Inductive Bible study…

And who I am today is worth the years of “wilderness” learning that He alone satisfies. For whatever things I thought were loss to me are truly gain in view of knowing Christ more.
